Towards Global Eminence

Since its founding, Kyung Hee University has shared its pioneering Kyung Hee Spirit of "Scholarship and Peace" with the world. Continuing its founding principle of "creating a civilized world" and establishing common values for humanity, Kyung Hee University has contributed to the actualization of a "cultural world for humanity."
Since its 60th anniversary, Kyung Hee University has been creating a new paradigm for 21st century university development and has been preparing for a second leap forward. With the goals of "rebuilding academic authority," "creating an academic world of dialogue," and "realizing a future society of harmony and creativity," Kyung Hee is going beyond the existing paradigm of modernity to create a better future for humanity.

Education

Through a harmony of academic excellence and "Global Eminence," Kyung Hee University is cultivating global leaders with a "creative humanity." To do so, Kyung Hee's convergence education combines professional and general knowledge. It also combines the insights of life and space sciences, and humans and civilization in basic humanities education. Additionally, convergence education builds a global educational and research network in which the different academic disciplines, academics and reality can communicate. Through this specialized education that encompasses the University's history and traditions, Kyung Hee is cultivating "future Kyung Hee-ans and future global citizens with the capacity to creatively practice the common values of humanity."

Research

Kyung Hee University seeks to restore the true character of an academic community and to promote creative research that will lead to the transformation of society and the creation of history. As such, it is encouraging trans-disciplinary research and strengthening research capacity. Kyung Hee also hosts lectures by international scholars to embrace new learning, and is building an optimal research and education infrastructure. It is promoting communication and dialogue among various academic disciplines such as the natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, engineering and applied sciences, medical sciences, arts, and athletics while also developing programs for the close collaboration of the world's top research, educational, and practical institutions. Through these efforts, Kyung Hee University is contributing to a better life for humanity, the formation of new knowledge, and the future of scholarship.

Praxis

By putting into practice knowledge gained through years of education and research, Kyung Hee University is striving to create "a future society of harmony and creativity." To do so, Kyung Hee is transforming itself into a global hub of social service. It is creating a new paradigm for social service that contributes to the well-being of society and promotes dialogue and harmony among world society, international institutions, governments, businesses, media, and academia. Seeking "Global Eminence" on a foundation of academic excellence, Kyung Hee is forming an academic community that fulfills its social responsibility and cultivates individuals who can communicate with and serve others.

As a "shrine of scholarship and peace" that creates and practices humanity's common values, Kyung Hee University is opening the future to a new paradigm of university development in the 21st century. Transcending both the traditional role of the university as a mere location and the close-mindedness of academia, Kyung Hee is being reborn as a center of education, research, and practice that seeks the creative integration of theory and praxis.

Kyung Hee University and the University of Pennsylvania signed a General Agreement for Academic Exchange in October 2005, setting up the Penn-Kyung Hee Collaborative. Founded in 1740, Penn was the first academic institution in the United States to institute the modern university system. As a leader in interdisciplinary education and research, it has been building an academic tradition that harmonizes theory and practice.

Humanity hopes for a future in which diversity and uniformity can peacefully coexist. As such, we must overcome the distortions and perversions of history to pave the road to empathy, consensus, reconciliation, and convergence. The Global Collaborative intends to establish a new paradigm of university education that integrates education, research, and practice. The Global Collaborative is a forward-looking effort for diversity and for the establishment of humanity's shared values and knowledge through cooperative exchange programs that transcend borders.

By 2008, the Global Collaborative was expanded to include China's Beijing University, Japan's Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU), Russia's Moscow State University, the UN Department of Economics and Social Affairs (DESA), and the UN Conference of NGOs (CoNGO). Currently, the Global Collaborative is leading international cooperation on the topic of "Humanity, Civilization and Global Governance."

The Global Collaborative organizes lectures by professionals from international organizations such as the UN and CoNGO and provides various practical internship opportunities such as the Civic Service Internship. Collaboration among participating universities and institutions will be expanded in the future as students are offered opportunities to participate in the Global Collaborative program while they are enrolled at Kyung Hee.

Global Studio Network

The Global Studio Network (GSN) aims to cultivate practice-oriented intellectuals who can communicate, harmonize, and create with a comprehensive understanding of future scholarship industries and civilization. Global Studios will be set up and run at various hubs of academics, culture, and civilization throughout the world. These studios, located in core cities at the forefront of the world's education, research, and culture, will allow the world's scholars, students, and citizens to share top notch research, educational, and practical trends in real time via web broadcasts of important international conferences and lectures by eminent scholars.

In 2009, Kyung Hee University completed a GSN studio and video conferencing room, and installed a video lecture system at the College of Engineering on the Global Campus. It also launched the GSN homepage (www.gsn.ac.kr) and is planning to run an Internet broadcasting service. Training for a multimedia intern team, called Global Video Frontier, and a translation and interpretation intern team is underway.

When the GSN system is in full force, scholars, students, professionals, activists, entrepreneurs, artists, and the public will be able to exchange and share quality lecture contents in real time. Through the GSN, scholars in remote areas of the world will be able to conduct cooperative research and video seminars. Users will also be able to carry out global service projects via the Internet. Studios will be set up throughout the world until 2012. By 2015, the GSN is expected to take root as a global academic community with the voluntary participation of universities and institutions in Korea and abroad.
